With any number of training plans available online, you might wonder why hiring a coach is necessary. Having a coach in your corner can be a total game change. Here's why...

  1. You never have to worry if you're doing it "right". Your coach will use their expertise to design a plan that will move your forward to your goals. They'll include appropriate mileage and targeted workouts to achieve your goals and balance them with any necessary cross training and strength training. And they'll of course make sure you're getting enough rest and recovery (REST = a runner's favorite 4 letter word)

  2. You receive regular feedback about how you're doing. Whether you're struggling through workouts, or hitting them out of the park, your coach will constantly be reviewing your training logs and progress. This way, updates can be made to your plan to make sure you're always being challenged in the most effective way.

  3. You have help when life happens. Have a vacation coming up? Or maybe you woke up under the weather. Your coach can help you adjust your schedule accordingly, and help you keep a healthy mindset should anything unexpected arise.

  4. You have an automatic cheerleader. Your coach always wants you to find success. That doesn't just mean that you're always achieving your race day goals. Your coach will help you recognize all of the small wins throughout your training block, and trust me, there will be a lot!

  5. They'll keep you accountable. It can sometimes be easy to talk ourselves out of training runs or accessory work. But when you know you have a coach waiting to review your training log, it can be an extra motivator to stay on top of your schedule.

  6. They'll help you navigate your off season. So often I see runners train for a big goal race, then do little running or maintenance work until the next race comes around. They ramp up again for 12 weeks, run a race, and the cycle continues. Your coach will help you create a focused plan for the time between your races so you no longer need to wonder what you should be doing in the off season.

  7. They'll help you create realistic goals and manage expectations. Sometimes we set goals that sound nice, but we don't know how achievable they are. While results can never be guaranteed, your coach can help you determine if your goal is realistic in the timeframe you're looking for. If it is, that's great! But some goals might take more than one training cycle to achieve, and your coach can help you build a roadmap to get there.
